Now for some before-and-after pictures of Tomorrowland. Above is the old Tomorrowland as seen from the Skyway. That is the Grand Prix Raceway on the left, the Tomorrowland Terrace restaurant on the right, and the Starjets in the distance, along with the tracks of the WEDway PeopleMover. Much the same view as the picture above, except from an elevated position.
And here is the new Tomorrowland also seen from the Skyway. That is the Tomorrowland Indy Speedway on the left, Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe on the right, and the Astro Orbiter farther back, along with the tracks of the Tomorrowland Transit Authority. Except for the Astro Orbiter, much of it looks the same from this angle, except for some different paint colors. There also seem to be a few taller palm trees missing. And it looks like they managed to straighten things out. Oh wait, never mind, that first picture is just at an angle.
Another before-and-after comparison. Here are the old Starjets that used to circle high above Tomorrowland. That rocket ship design probably seemed pretty futuristic when it was first installed, long before the space shuttle was in use.
And now the Astro Orbiter. You can't see the rockets circling in this picture, but you can tell how much the looks of things have changed overall with that large model of a solar system.
One last comparison, this time with Space Mountain, seen here in 1987 with the Skyway passing between the mountain and the PeopleMover tracks.
And here is Space Mountain as it looks today. Nothing at all has changed about the mountain itself, but there is a new building next to it, and the Skyway is gone, although that was not part of the Tomorrowland renovations. Also, the Tomorrowland Transit Authority structure now has some color to it.
Moving a little closer to Space Mountain, we get a better look at that new building, the Tomorrowland Light and Power Company. This building houses a video game arcade and also serves as the exit to Space Mountain. I guess it gives those who don't want to ride Space Mountain something to do while they wait on the rest of their party. |
