Fantasyland Photo Tour

Time once again for another photo tour, and this installment brings us to Fantasyland. This land, of course, features attractions based on some of those famous Disney films, such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and Dumbo, as well as newer films such as The Little Mermaid and The Lion King. Most of the area features a medieval fair decor, with the exteriors of the attractions made to resemble tents. So to get started, what better way to see Fantasyland than by...

The Skyway. When it was still there, you could fly high above Fantasyland on your way to Tomorrowland (or the other way around) in small cabs suspended from a cable. Probably not the best attraction for sufferers of acrophobia. But aside from glimpses of the unglamorous tops of the Fantasyland buildings, you could see all the way to Spaceship Earth a few miles away at Epcot. The Skyway closed in November of 1999. So now, you aren't able to get views such as...

An elevated view of the rear of Cinderella Castle. Here you can also see some of the previously mentioned Fantasyland rooftops, as well as the Contemporary Resort off in the distance. You can see more pictures of the Castle in our previous photo tour article. Another view from the Skyway that you don't get any more is...

The 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea lagoon. Here you can see the Nautilus as it makes its way around the lagoon. From the Skyway, it was also easier to make out the track that the submarines followed. And the bubbles in the lower right of the picture are when the submarine was diving, an effect simply created by having bubbles pass in front of the windows. For more information, might I recommend our 20,000 Leagues article. This attraction closed in 1994, although the lagoon is still there. One attraction that will probably never close is...

It's a Small World. As popular as the attraction is, it never has a very long wait, which makes it the perfect place to enjoy some air conditioning on a hot summer day. Sure, the song is repetitive, but at least it has a lively tempo. As you can see in this picture, The Magic Kingdom's version of this attraction does not have the elaborate facade and outdoor loading area found at Disneyland. I would guess that the designers felt that a covered loading area was much more appropriate to protect the guests and cast members alike from Florida's heavier rainfalls, more frequent lightning strikes, and sub-tropical sun. One thing you will always find throughout Fantasyland is...

People. Lots of them. Especially with kids. Fantasyland always seems to me to be the most crowded land at the Magic Kingdom. Perhaps because parents with small kids figure these are the attractions the kids will like the most. Here you can see people trying to decide between Peter Pan's Flight on the left, It's a Small World on the right, or the Skyway straight ahead. Most of the Fantasyland attractions start to get crowded early in the morning and remain that way for the rest of the day. Stepping back a bit further, we still see...
